Senior Fitness

Do you or anyone you know struggle with things such as opening a bottle of water, carrying groceries into the house, or putting on your clothes without using a structure for support? How about getting your leg up to put your socks and shoes on or getting out of a chair without having to brace yourself? These are just a few activities in a long list of challenges that we face as we age.

Our body is a demand-driven, adaptable, self-repairing system that requires movement and muscular activity to maintain optimal function. Consider what happens to someone who is bedridden for a month or more; muscle mass, flexibility, strength, bone density and range of motion all begin to decrease.

Core stability is compromised as small stabilizer muscles get recruited to do the job that the larger muscles are supposed to do, usually resulting in pain or injury throughout the mid/lower back.

Balance and coordination is challenged, making it more difficult to stay steady on their feet. According to the CDC, each year, more than one-third of people age 65 or older fall. Of those who fall, up to 30 percent suffer moderate to severe injuries, such as hip fractures, and increase their risk of early death, Falls and related injuries can seriously impact a senior’s life, limiting certain activities or even making it impossible to live independently.

But after working with so many senior clients, what we find to be the most challenging, is the confidence this person loses in their ability to move and perform in everyday activities. The bottom line is that aging is very much like a longer version of being bedridden. Slowly, over decades, the same decrease in capabilities occur. The answer is simple, MOVEMENT IS MEDICINE and therefore the lack of it is devastating to the human body.

Start moving, and your ability to move will improve, along with many other changes such as blood sugar levels regulating, and remain steady, stored fat will reduce, insulin sensitivity improves, blood pressure comes down and your heart gets stronger. The vascular system actually starts building collateral arteries around blocked vessels, improving blood flow to your heart and other organs. The body’s repair mechanisms speed up, things heal faster, the immune system gets stronger; you get sick less often and you recover more quickly.

Our functional exercise programs are custom designed to meet your specific needs, while working to prevent further issues from arising. We also emphasize strategic corrective movements designed to improve strength and power around the ankle, knee and hip joints, align posture, and fix muscular imbalances.
